Mukai Artist Studio
Designer-led Design-build by arketype
Dennis Mukai is a contemporary artist, graphic designer, illustrator and photographer located in Los Angeles. After moving into a single story home in an established neighborhood on a large gently sloping parcel with a southern view of the mountains, he found himself working out of a bedroom in the house. Not having enough space or privacy to work, arketype was commissioned to design and build a detached studio for him that takes advantage of the far and near views without cutting-off the yard. The result is an open rectangular plan with ample volume. Environmentally harvested lumber was used for structural and architectural use. The interior features a natural concrete floor below a single slope roof with natural Douglas Fir truss like ceiling framing with integrated LED spot lighting that can be adjusted to highlight a work surface or illuminate art. The exterior features natural wood elements of the roof eaves and deck contrasting against dark gray opaque stained eaves and decking. The custom painted entry door is in the artists signature orange and can be protected from the west sun with a barn-style reclaimed wood shutter. The existing mature pepper tree shades the southern wall of the building that includes a corrugated zincalume wall treatment and a stainless cable railing.
